Upcoming FSU Field Trip!

We have a field trip coming up to see an FSU Women's Basketball game of November 18th! We are very excited to offer this opportunity to students. Permission slips will be coming home soon. Students must have reach 35% of their AR Goal by the Friday before the field trip, November 14th in order to attend. We are really encouraging students to read throughout the whole nine weeks and not to wait until the last week to really read for their AR Goal. Please make sure students are reading at least 30 minutes a night! Independent reading not only promotes creativity and cognitively complex thinking, but also builds students reading comprehension and stamina.

Speeches

Don't forget students will be presenting their speeches in class on Friday the November 7th! Speeches should be between 2 and 3 minutes. Students will be graded on their ability to present their speech to our class comfortably while making eye contact, using expression, and the length of their speech. Students can use notecards, or bring their written speech up with them, but should have most of their speech memorized so they don't need to read the whole thing. Make sure students are practicing their speeches and timing themselves so they can be comfortable and ready in class on Friday. :)

Wild Adventures payments due this week!

Tuesday is Test Day in Reading!

Our next Reading Test will be Tuesday, September 30th. Make sure students are completing their homework daily, because it will practice the skills that will assessed on the test. We will also have a Spelling Test and Grammar Test on Tuesday.

You can help practice our skills for each lesson by logging into your students' Wonders account and clicking on School to Home. This section of the website provides information and practice activities for the vocabulary strategy, comprehension skill, and spelling words we are currently working on in class. You can also click on Resources and see all the materials that are available to us here at school for the entire year. In this lesson, we are working on Sequence and on Greek Roots. You could type either of those into the search box and get quite a few resources to help practice those skills.

Wonders Writing Rubric

The students took their first Wonders assessment today and the results are in!  Check your child's Pinpoint account to see how they did on the multiple choice section.  I am working to grade the writing and scores will be entered soon.

This year, writing will be scored on a 4 point rubric scale.  Below is a copy of the rubric that will be used.  A score of 4 will equate to a 100%, a 3 will equate to an 80%, a 2 will equate to a 60%, etc.  We will be working on formulating complete responses this year.

First Wonders Test

Both classes took their first Wonders test on Tuesday. We did the tests together as a class and they will not be counted for a grade. The tests were sent home with students so they can show you what the test looks like and what they're expected to do. I will also have copies of the test available for you to review at Open House on Monday, September 8th from 6-8! Next Wednesday, we will take our second test. This test I will ask the students to take independently, but the scores will not be entered as a grade. The third test, which should take place in Wednesday, September 17th WILL COUNT for a grade. Please make sure your student is doing their homework daily to practice the skills we are learning in class so they can be prepared for their test. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Wonders

As you may know, we have a new reading curriculum this year in Leon County. We will be using the Wonders reading curriculum. It is set up differently from our previous reading curriculum, Imagine It. Students will focus on one specific comprehension skill and vocabulary strategy each week. They will read multiple stories that all reinforce the skills we are working on for that week. Students will then be assessed on their mastery of those skills by reading a new story and answering comprehension and vocabulary questions based on the story. The first 2 weeks' tests will be taken as a class and not counted as a test grade to give students time and practice with the new style of testing. We will not be testing on Fridays, so make sure to check your student's planner for the days that the test will be given.

Test dates will also be sent out using Remind 101. If you haven't signed up for Remind 101, just text @swes5 to (863) 232-5692.

Each student has a login and password that will allow them to access the kid friendly Wonders website where they can get their vocabulary words for the week, complete practice assignments, and even play games practicing their weekly skills. Students' usernames are LCSB_ and their 9 digit student number they use for Success Maker. Their password is lcs12345.

Example:

Username: LCSB_123456789
Password: lcs12345
